How to draw a rose: this free lesson takes you there in 7 easy steps, with a picture for every step, and it suits beginners. You start with one light line down the middle, block in the bloom as an oval and a circle, and place the two leaves. Then you draw the rolled centre and the flared petals, round out the bowl of the rose and finish the stem and leaves. Building the flower from simple shapes first is what keeps the petals even. Draw it on paper, or trace each step in the Pencilbloom app.

Step 1: Mark the centre stem line
Draw one light vertical line down the middle of the page, from the top of the bloom to the bottom of the stem.
Tip: Press very lightly; guides get erased later.
Step 2: Block in the bloom
Sketch a wide oval for the flower head and a rounder circle below it for the bowl of the rose, both centred on the line.
Tip: Keep your arm loose and draw the shapes quickly.
Step 3: Place the two leaves
Draw two small slanted ovals on the stem: the left leaf higher, the right leaf lower and angled up and to the right.
Tip: Check that the leaves sit at different heights.
Step 4: Draw the top petals and bud
Draw the rolled centre with its spiral, then the two flared outer petals that sweep out to each side and curve down to the middle.
Tip: Start with the round top, then work outward in smooth, confident curves.
Step 5: Draw the bowl, upper stem and
Draw the big rounded petals below the flare, meeting at the centre. Continue down the stem, adding the left leaf and its vein.
Tip: Let the curves meet at the centre line to keep the rose symmetrical.
Step 6: Add the right leaf
Draw the right leaf rising from the stem, with its pointed tip and a curved vein running up the middle.
Tip: Draw the outer edge in one stroke if you can.
Step 7: Finish the stem
Draw the lower stem straight down along your centre line, ending a little above the bottom of the page.
Tip: Pull the line with your whole arm, not just your wrist.

FAQ
What paper and pencil should I use for tracing?
With the camera, any plain paper works, from printer paper to a sketchbook. For Trace on screen, use thin paper so the picture shines through. An HB pencil is good for guide lines and a softer 2B for darker final lines. Tape the paper down so it doesn't move.
How do the step-by-step drawing lessons work?
Each lesson builds a drawing in small steps, big shapes first and details last, with a picture for every step. You can draw along on paper while looking at the steps, or trace each step in the app. Many lessons are free, and you'll find them all on our Learn page.
