About Pencilbloom

Drawing should feel possible.

Updated

Most people stop drawing as kids because the picture in their head never matched the paper. Pencilbloom closes that gap: the phone shows the lines, your hand learns them.

Why tracing

From Renaissance workshops to animation studios, artists traced first and freehanded later. We built a calm, modern version of that.

old trick, new tool

Every lesson, checked by a person

Before a lesson goes live, someone on our team goes through it step by step.

What you’ll find here

Pencilbloom is an app first, but this website is made to help on its own, even before you install anything. Here is what each part is for, and where to start.

  • Learn to draw

Free step-by-step drawing lessons for beginners, sorted by subject. Each one builds a picture part by part, with an image for every step, so you can follow along on paper or trace it in the app.

  • Coloring pages

Free printable coloring pages for kids and grown-ups, each one a PDF. Print a page and color it with your own pencils, or color it on screen in the app.

  • Tracing guides

Short, practical articles about setting up your phone and paper, tracing clean lines and turning a traced picture into a drawing that is your own.

  • How it works

The whole idea in a few steps: prop your phone over the paper, pick a picture and trace the lines you see on the screen with a real pencil.

  • Photo to lines

See how a photo becomes a clean line drawing, using our sample photos. In the app, you can do the same with photos of your own and then trace them.

Most pages end with a way to open the same picture in the app, so you can go from reading to tracing in one tap.
