How to draw a cat: this free lesson draws a cute, round cat in 9 easy steps, with a picture for every step, and it suits beginners and kids. You block in a circle for the head and an oval for the body, add a center line and an eye line, and mark the curl of the tail. Then you draw the head, ears and body in one line, add the tail, go over the outline, and finish with the eyes, nose, mouth and whiskers. Draw it on paper, or trace each step in the Pencilbloom app.

Step 1: Block in head and body
Lightly draw a wide circle for the head near the top, and a larger pear-shaped oval below it for the body.
Step 2: Add a center line
Draw a vertical line through the middle of the head and body. Add a light horizontal line across the head for the eyes.
Step 3: Mark the tail
Sketch a curved band rising from the lower right of the body, ending in a rounded tip about level with the chest.
Step 4: Draw the head and body
Follow the inner line of the cat in one go: the ears, the round head, then down the body to the paws.
Step 5: Add the tail
Draw the tail curling up from the side of the body.
Step 6: Go over the outline
Trace the outer line around the whole cat, a pencil width outside the first one, so the outline looks bold.
Step 7: Draw the eyes
Add the two round eyes, level with each other.
Step 8: Add the nose and mouth
Draw the small nose in the middle, then the mouth curving down from it.
Step 9: Finish with the whiskers
Add two short whiskers on each cheek.
Tip: Light, quick strokes keep whiskers thin.

FAQ
What paper and pencil should I use for tracing?
With the camera, any plain paper works, from printer paper to a sketchbook. For Trace on screen, use thin paper so the picture shines through. An HB pencil is good for guide lines and a softer 2B for darker final lines. Tape the paper down so it doesn't move.
How do the step-by-step drawing lessons work?
Each lesson builds a drawing in small steps, big shapes first and details last, with a picture for every step. You can draw along on paper while looking at the steps, or trace each step in the app. Many lessons are free, and you'll find them all on our Learn page.
